Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Cami Ostman, a 56-year-old writer and writing coach from Shoreline, Washington. She wasn't going to do anything with the land, so she said I could have it. I can think of seven friends in my age range who've bought off-grid land or purchased sprinter vans or RVs. In Seattle, I'm accountable to my students and employees, but when I'm on my land, I leave my work behind. There's nothing I miss when I'm in the yurt — it's so ridiculously peaceful.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

The tiny firehouse, tiny houses, yurts, and domes that they rent out range from $99 to $148 a night. They went on to build a tiny firehouse on wheels to take to fundraising events to raise money for firefighters. The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management has set aside areas for free camping in national forests, national grasslands and BLM-managed lands.

Enter the co-working space, which allows for a bit of everything. From shopping malls to private mansions to hotels and gyms, co-working spaces are becoming more creative in the remote work era — with a boost from startups building platforms to connect companies with spaces for rent. Airstreams and yurtsThe dominant co-working venues for years were WeWork and other communal spaces in downtown office buildings. Gilbreath from Liquidspace said that co-working spaces have expanded outside urban cores and financial districts, and rental spaces are becoming quirkier. “Co-working spaces have usually been centrally located in big buildings,” said Amina Moreau, founder of Radious, which calls its business the Airbnb of office rentals and meeting spaces in residential areas.

Travelers may crave a break from their phones, but going off the grid can prove difficult for some. Courtesy of the KernohansIn Missouri, Michael Loftis built an off-the-grid cabin for his family, but eventually moved them to a town nearby. Many guests are quick to ask Kernohan if bears or other wildlife are a threat to their stay. Courtesy of Michael LoftisTo add to the rustic mood of his cabin, Loftis has furnished it with antiques, including a clawfoot tub and a 1920s gas-powered cookstove. Thankfully, she was safe, but it reminded Loftis that many guests are unfamiliar with old-school appliances.

"They asked us to comment and we said we saw no reason to do that," a Kazakh foreign ministry spokesman said. A year ago - just before Russia invaded Ukraine - Astana demonstrated its reliance on Moscow by briefly inviting in Russian troops to help put down street unrest. A poll carried out late last year showed 22% of Kazakhs supported Ukraine, against 13% for Russia, while 59% remained neutral. Her "Nation's Future" group started collecting aid the day after Russia invaded Ukraine, and has raised about $1.5 million in cash and donated items from about 20,000 people. "We are helping ourselves in the first place by helping Ukraine, we are supporting our independence, our decolonisation, and the image of our country."
Dubai-based Ardh Architect has designed a glamping site with tents suspended between two mountains. The two-person tents could start at an estimated $300 per pod. Instead of tents pitched in the dirt, the architecture studio's design features tents suspended almost 330 feet above the ground and between two mountains. Arqui9/Ardh ArchitectIf approved, the hanging campsite will have 10 two-person tents with the option for additional or fewer "pods." These motorized pods can then be individually lowered and raised, hanging about 328 feet off the ground depending on wind conditions.
